OpenMedic, one of the civic tech solutions birthed by the accelerator program of Civic Hive finally enters the developmental stage. OpenMedic will enable users to have easy access to essential medicines irrespective of their location and also show the inventory level of essential medical consumables in health facilities and other medical outlets in Nigeria.

For a known fact, about 2,300 under-five-year-old children and 145 women of childbearing age die every single day in Nigeria. Preventable or treatable infectious diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, measles, and HIV/AIDS account for more than 70 percent of the estimated one million under-five deaths in Nigeria.

However, essential interventions such as easy access to essential medicines; reaching women and children would have averted most of these deaths. Dennis Akagha, the LEAD PARTNER, OpenMedic says, “Unless essential medicines are within the reach of the people who need them, availability and affordable prices have little or no impact.”

OpenMedic takes frontier of accessibility to essential medicines beyond city centers, unlike the rural areas where 40 percent of Nigerians actually reside. According to the Lead Partner, “OpenMedic intends to transition potentially viable interventions in partnership with other stakeholders such as the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), The Nigerian Medical Association and other relevant medical/health associations in Nigeria.”  Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, OpenMedic will promote the quality of healthcare in Nigeria, prevent epidemics and diseases and ultimately save lives.

OpenMedic, in the developmental stage with the technical support provided by Civichive aims to ensure that the project further scales into a very impactful civic solution. The project is indeed evolving.
