About Restorative Justice for Africa (REJA)
REJA is a youth-led organization using restorative justice interventions, tech-enabled legal support, and reintegration programs to close major justice gaps in Nigeria.
Our solution focuses on promoting people-centered programs for justice-impacted individuals and communities that have been affected by crime as a way to dismantle systems that perpetuate unjust incarcerations, prevent prison congestion, and curb re-offending in Nigeria.
About Osariemen Omoruyi Shobanke
Osariemen Omoruyi Shobanke is a lawyer, social entrepreneur, and prominent advocate for restorative justice in Nigeria. As the Founder and Executive Director of Restorative Justice for Africa (REJA), she draws from personal experiences to prioritize alternatives to incarceration and proper reintegration of justice-impacted individuals, fostering safer communities.
With her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Benin, Osariemen has been called to the Nigerian bar and through her work, she has defended over 200 unjustly incarcerated individuals abandoned in prison. She remains committed to ensuring equal access to justice for all.
Her unwavering dedication to criminal justice reforms has earned her multiple accolades, including the Innovators Award in Global Affairs in New York, the Future Awards Africa Prize for Advocacy and Activism in September 2023, and winner of the Active Citizens Award by BudgIT Nigeria. Osariemen is also a distinguished Generation Change Fellow of the United States Institute of Peace and a 2022 Echoing Green Fellow. She was also honored with the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders and had the privilege of attending the High-Level Political Forum at the United Nations in July 2023 where she made a strong case for restorative justice.
Due to her shinning commitment to closing the justice gap, Osariemen was engaged as a consultant for a European Union-funded research initiative by the IIDEA in March 2024. Her work has also been recognized and supported by prominent organizations like Dovetail Impact Foundation, US Mission in Nigeria and The Hague Institute for Innovation in Law (Hiil Justice). She is currently building Justice Mobile, a platform that leverages technology to reinvent corrections.
