Civic Hive: Artificial Intelligence for Governance and Service Delivery

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has demonstrated its influence in every aspect of society today, notably its potential to enhance transparency, accountability and effective governance while optimizing the service delivery process. One of our goals at Civic Hive is to support existing and new organizations to push solutions that address issues shaping our society.

As far back as 2020, Civic Hive has invested in the capacity of young people and civic tech leaders on how to leverage artificial intelligence to solve social issues, drive accountability and simplify how citizens understand and process big data and improve their access to information and service delivery. As part of our commitment we have hosted global thought leaders and tech leaders on knowledge exchange and transfer.

This year, In partnership with Africacomicade, we hosted a two-day hybrid workshop on how CivicTech leaders and non-profit organizations can harness AI to develop innovative solutions. The first part of the workshop took place virtually, where different organizations spoke about their work, the gap, and the change they are trying to create. After this, the facilitators took them on a different approach on how they can use AI to augment their existing work.

Esther Chukwuma highlighted the importance of AI in enhancing service delivery and governance. She addressed the successful applications of AI for social good, healthcare, humanitarian aid, education, and poverty alleviation around the world.

Gbosaman, a seasoned artist and animator, focused on the creative aspects of AI with his presentation on “Generative AI Assistance for Indies,” emphasizing the importance of leveraging AI to streamline artistic processes particularly for creative innovators and change makers. Hammad, an AI expert, explored how AI is shaping the future of digital innovation through XR (extended reality), an umbrella name VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), and MR (mixed reality).

Each presentation offered a well-rounded perspective on the vast potential of AI and was followed by an interactive Q&A session where the participants and organizations took turns in asking questions and sharing their perspectives on the benefits and concerns of using AI. This session highlighted the importance of adopting open-mindedness and collaboration to give room for growth, mistakes and change in this constantly evolving field.

While there are still concerns about online safety, internet accessibility and penetration and digital literacy in Nigeria, together with our fellows, programs and impact, Civic Hive is committed to creating an inclusive and digital learning space for the good of all.  We will do this by investing in opportunities and inclusive programs that use low tech platforms for grassroot people and high tech tools to optimize and service delivery in a seamless manner.
