Civic Tech Landscape in Nigeria: Civic Hive Launches Landmark Report

The global existence of technology has created the potential to transform public services delivery and digital governance and ultimately disrupt the status quo to increase democratic participation. While Nigeria’s problems are enormous, civic tech has shown a giant stride in bridging the gap between citizens and the government, promoting participation in civic life, and the demand for accountability in order to make governance work for the people.

Civic Hive, the innovation hub of BudgIT with the goal of developing new civic tech leaders; create an innovative space for partnerships and support new civic tech organisations; and strengthen the capacity of already existing NGOs in Nigeria In order to meaningfully impact the Nigerian civic tech space has release their landmark civic tech landscape report.

In this report, Civic Hive highlighted that in the last decade, civic tech and innovation have become a stronger force, given the capability and resultant evidence to create solutions to many of the challenges that Nigerians face. This is also due to the significant increase in internet and social media use in Nigeria over the past years, which has contributed to citizens’ and stakeholders’ engagement with civic tech platforms.

“Technology has the power to transform governance and empower citizens,” says Oluwaseun Afolabi, Kwerty Data Lead, “The Civic Tech landscape in Nigeria holds great potential for driving positive change, but it requires continued collaboration among stakeholders and sustained support for these initiatives.”

Speaking on the report, Civic Hive Lead, Mr Joseph Amenaghawon said “The report provides a one-stop opportunity for civic-tech as well as gov-tech enthusiasts to appreciate the journey till date, peep into the future, and deeply understand the challenges so far and the prospects for new innovations. It is a huge resource for all.”

Across all spectrum of civic tech usage and beyond, Civic Hive’s Civic Tech Landscape Report aims to create an open, up-to-date research, knowledge repository, spotlight innovations, and stakeholders in the civic tech space to improve advocacy, strengthen systems and decision-making. The report highlights key challenges, gaps, future, and recommendations for civic tech usage and stakeholders in Nigeria. The report is available for download here.
